We Have A Theme!

The mutha krewe theme this year is Krewe Du Vieux’s Magical Misery Tour.

Subkrewe Theme: We have an idea of the subkrewe theme, as outlined in the current email storm, so are still open to suggestions.

Royalty: There is a captains’ meeting on October 4th at which royalty will be decided. Top nominees are Sylvester Francis (guardian of the flame), John Boutte (heart and soul of post-Katrina New Orleans) and Deacon John (entertainer, crusader for our musicians and president of the musicians’ union). Please send any suggestions you might have – and why you thing the person would be a good king or queen – so that Marilyn can carry them to the meeting.

Ball Venue: 2121 Chartres (corner of Chartres and Elysian Fields). It is a 6000 sq. ft. warehouse, offered to the Krewe for $1. The Krewe will have to rent port-o-lets, portable heaters, tables and chairs, and do some floor work on the facility. We will contract out with a charitable group to supply booze and food for the ball.

Tentative Marching Route: Den to Franklin Ave., to Royal, down Royal to Conti, then left to Decatur to Esplanade or Elysian Fields. There will be no parading on Frenchman St. this year. The Frenchman St. Business Assn. would not agree to restrict parking for our parade night, so phooey on them!

Brew Doo Fundraiser: December 8, 6-10 p.m., at the Den. This will be a private party, members only this year, $10 admission, all the beer you can drink. Music is TBA.

CRAPS Fundraising: The Zulu poster raffle initiated at this meeting as a CRAPS fundraiser will be continued to the next meeting in October ($10 per ticket). This is a 1994 poster of The Ambassador, and probably much more valuable than pre-K. Another Zulu poster, also from 1994, The Big Shot, will be offered later for raffle. Both posters (and other Zulu characters) can be purchased outright for $80, with the owner of the poster company and the krewe splitting the proceeds. Contact Marilyn if interested.

Next Meeting: We will be meeting again at 12:00 noon, Saturday October 6th at MRB.

Dues: $125 / $175 – by November 1. If you need to spread out payments, give Toni a deposit and pay the rest by December 1st.

Almost 17 Days To Parade Day!

COSTUME PICK-UP PARTY
Saturday, Jan 27th – 1:00 p.m. – at Louise and Michael’s

If you cannot make it to the pick-up party, please arrange to have someone get your costume for you. Otherwise, you will be making the trek up Elysian Fields to Marilyn’s house in Gentilly to get it.

Costumes are basic, and we are looking forward to seeing all of that CRAPS creativity as you customize your costume.

  • Cowboys will have purple chaps, green vests and a gold hat.
  • Cowgirls will have purple skirts, green vests and a gold hat.
  • Saloon girls will have purple skirts and a gold hat – top TBA (get with Lindsey Cronin on this). You will need to either make an underskirt with nylon net (cheap at any fabric store), buy one or try to find on at a thrift shop. If you want to buy one as an investment in your costume closet, LIMBO at 1125 Decatur (523-3435) is expecting a hand made shipment any day – but the owner said you better get one fast because they sell out as soon as they come in. Target has some inexpensive bustiers online.

THROWS
Mostly beads this year. We will have sherrif’s badge stickers to hand out and possible some other paper handouts. Check Orientaltrading.com for cowboy throws. Some people have found beads with cowboy hats at local Mardi Gras shops.

COCKTAIL PARTY
Tom Morgan and the lovely Hilde will again be hosting our parade eve cocktail party – February 2, 6:30 p.m. This year it is BYOB – so bring your favorite adult beverage.

PARADE DAY PARTY
We will be kicking off our parade day at 3:00 parade day at Cafe Brazil. Sally and her committee promise to have a wonderful buffet for our enjoyment and sustenance. Leroy Jones and the Hurricane Brass Band will kick-start us and march us over to the den. Trisha and Dawn will be waiting for us at the den with another spread (and jello shots).

BALL
Will be at the State Palace, which was sold and is being fixed enough for us to have the ball there. The opening act is Billy Iuso and the Restless Native. Next will be a New Orleans music review, with lots of guests. The headliners are the Wild Magnolias.

BALL TICKETS
$25.00 – Available at Louisiana Music Factory in the 200 block of Decatur and at Up in Smoke in the 4900 block of Magazine. It is possible that tickets will be available at the door – this has not been decided yet.

T-SHIRTS
Habitat for Insanity t-shirts are available at Up In Smoke in the 4900 block of Magazine St. All proceeds to go towards the increase in den rental fees. Buy early, buy often.

Looking Back!

On the evening of Sunday, October 16, 2005, the Quarter played host to a jazz funeral for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, led by a few musicians and many New Orleans residents.

CNN and NPR covered the ceremony, in which they include the pictures and comments of some of our very own CRAPpers, including Dawn and Disaster the ferret! As krewe captain, Louweezy, said in a recent email, “The secondline was totally awesome! The NPR link is cooler, and even has sound & video! It was a hoot.”

C.R.A.P.S. Fingers The Dike – The 20th Annual KdV parade rolled on Saturday, February 11th 2006. Pre-parade dressing met at Cafe Brasil at 3:00pm and we secondlined to the staging area with the King, Walter Williams, and the Paulin Brothers. C’est levee!

Welcome to the Krewe de C.R.A.P.S. weblog!

Hi everyone,

As our krewe changes, so should our web presence. A weblog will help us keep track of announcements and is easily updatable. It is also a great way to archive all that we’ve done over the years. In time, I will add links to our pictures and other krewe sites and a calendar of C.R.A.P.S. and Mutha Krewe events.

Thanks for your patience as C.R.A.P.S. second lines around the potholes of the information superhighway!

Your webmistress,
Maitri
